Yesterday, a herd of over 100 goats broke free and descended upon a neighbourhood in San Jose, California. The herd usually spends their days eating brush and weeds to help prevent wildfires, but yesterday they decided that they had other plans. They organised collectively to break through an electric fence and liberate themselves to invade a fancy neighbourhood. Residents were surprised and perhaps a bit worried that the goats would damage their chemically grown lawns. However, the goat liberation was short lived, and the goats were eventually rounded up and returned to their grazing. What a time to be alive.

Comparison is the thief of joy.

Looking around it may seem like some people just have it better than you. They may appear to be more accomplished, have more things or even enjoy more happiness than you do. Judging yourself against the lives of others only harms you. You never know what cobwebs might be hanging behind someone’s gleaming smile or job promotion. Everyone struggles, everyone has their own stories to tell, and comparing yourself to what might appear to be brighter, bigger or better than you is completely unproductive. Be proud of yourself, your story and your accomplishments AND have joy for others, knowing that you will never know their full story. Everyone deserves contentment, give yourself the gift of liberating yourself of jealousy and comparison.

Imagine in a world where you accept your own amazingness AND the amazingness of others.

Do you ever worry about fitting in and belonging with a group, squad or tribe? Sometimes there can be a lot of pressure to finding the right fit or going along with the flow. Many famous writers have remarked that the true path to belonging is to just be your most authentic self. It is difficult sometimes to find the balance between being your most authentic self and fitting in with others, but realizing that belonging is kind of an illusion, and happiness, belonging and less alienation happens when you just let that need for belonging go. Maya Angelou sums it up better:

You only are free when you realize you belong no place — you belong every place — no place at all

Find your own path, your own place to stand, and the rest will follow.
