The twenty eighth of March 2019

Don’t get stuck in the day to day, keep your eyes and mind on the bigger picture. Things are never as bad as they seem, and you never know, one day you have your head stuck in a fence, in a few months you might be on top of the world.

Don’t worry, you’ll get through it.

There is always that one person that holds everything together. That person is not necessarily the captain or the manager, but without that person, everything would simply fall apart. That person is reliable, helpful, and really brings the workplace, or home, or animal sanctuary together. Sometimes, that person might be a special goat to complete the herd. With that in mind, I am pleased to introduce you to Pam from The Haven Zoo. Pam really completes the herd at the Haven, much like how a certain character from The Office kept the shift afloat and everyone going. Pamela “Pam” Morgan Beesly (later Halpert)’s official role when the series began was that of receptionist, but really without her the office would have completely fallen apart. If there is someone like that in your life, take some time to let them know they are appreciated. And also, check out how to support The Haven Zoo.

Incase you missed it, yesterday’s goat from The Haven Zoo was named after the character Jim from the US version of the comedy program The Office. Continuing on that theme, today’s goat is named after Dwight Kurt Schrute III, who was often the target of Jim’s pranks. In addition to being pranked repeatedly by Jim, Dwight also served as the “Assistant to the Regional Manager” role as part of his duties as a paper salesperson, health and safety enthusiast, volunteer sheriff’s deputy, and managed his family’s beet farm. Beets are nutrient dense, a great addition to salads, and actually in season right now! Perhaps consider trying out a new beet recipe, supporting the Haven Zoo, and then having a mini-binge of some hilarious Office episodes?

I bet Dwight the Goat enjoys beets as well.

You may have noticed that for the past week or so, Goat of the Day has featured animals from The Haven Zoo, outside of Atlanta, Georgia. The Haven was founded by JohnieSue Thurman, an anthropologist who studied human and primate interactions in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and has over 14 years of experience working with animals. She also designed and conducted a research project that analyzed zoos in 15 different countries on four different continents to understand how each zoo cared for animals as well as making information about conservation available to the public. It is really inspiring that there are people like JohnieSue who set out with a dream dedicated to the greater good, and make it happen. Check out ways to support JohnieSue’s mission and/or volunteer.

Wonderful things come in small packages, for example Cece from The Haven Zoo! Before she found a home at the haven, she was attacked by wild dogs when she was young, affecting her growth. She doesn’t usually hang out with the herd, due to her smaller size and some of her particular needs she gets extra attention from her human caregivers and non-caprine zoo-mates, especially the pigs! Cece is proof positive that you don’t have to be the biggest and you don’t have to blend in to find your place in the world. If you are interested in opportunities to support Cece and her friends, check out opportunities to volunteer and support The Haven Zoo!

Pi is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. Its value is usually abbreviated to 3.14159; however, as an irrational number, Pi goes on infinitely. An irrational number is a number that cannot be made into a fraction. Pi is irrational, but without it we would have no idea how to calculate things like the size of the world or how much flour should be used to make a perfect twelve-inch pizza. If an idea seems irrational to you, perhaps it might still be possible. Perhaps, like Pi, the world is full of infinite seemingly irrational possibilities. What is irrational today may revolutionize tomorrow.

I am pleased to introduce you to Annie, Ernest’s sister from The Haven Zoo. Annie and Ernest are known around the Haven as a warm and friendly pair who greet visitors. Research has shown that goats often try to form relationships with the humans in their lives, similar to dogs. Perhaps it is because after 10,000 years of living together, goats see us as kindred spirits? Or perhaps it’s because The Haven Zoo is a wonderful home and Annie and Ernest are keen to show visitors around? Find out more about how to support Ernest, Annie and the rest by clicking here and come back for more goats tomorrow!

Today’s goat comes from Lavonia, Georgia USA. His name is Ernest and he is a lucky fellow who lives at The Haven Zoo. The Haven was founded by JohnieSue Thurman to provide a safe home for displaced exotic animals, promote conservation and animal welfare, as well as providing an opportunity for interactive education with visitors. JohnieSue is an anthropologist who specializes specifically in primates, although the zoo is home to a variety of animals, including a dozen or so goats! The Haven Zoo also has opportunities for volunteers and support.

Another Monday rolls around, another opportunity to have an awesome week! There are a lot of memes and moaning about Mondays, but I say, at least for this Monday, think of it as Marvelous Monday for moving monuments!
