First, thank you to Niki one of GOTD’s Twitter followers for pointing out that yesterday I did not post a picture of a goat, rather a sheep.

Second, I came upon a small flock of sheep this weekend while I was in Denmark with some friends. I am very fortunate that when I became a mother that many amazing women came into my life – the mothers of my son’s friends. There are many internet postings about random things that happen to you after giving birth, but perhaps one of the most amazing things is the people that come into your life because of your child and new status as a parent. Many of these women I would have never had the opportunity to meet had it not been for my son.

One of my mom pals organised a weekend for eight of us to get away and another one had a family summer home near Vejby. It was amazing, relaxing and we all had a wonderful time. These friends are so considerate that while driving to and from various parts of the beautiful green coastal plains, we suddenly stopped and lo and behold, there were some four legged friends with horizontal pupils. Of course, I was quite excited. We wandered around a property and were sadly unable to make contact with the owner. Their neighbor said they were goats, but I think Niki is correct that in fact, the friendly creatures my group happened upon are actually sheep.

Needless to say, I am really grateful for the entire experience, and although I am a few days early, I am dedicated Goat of the Day this week to moms everywhere.

Caring for your flock is better with reinforcements from neighboring flocks!

Apply yourself! You never know, whatever it is you’re going for just might work out. The only way to guarantee that you won’t get a position, job, place, scholarship, etc. is to not apply. So just go for it. If it doesn’t work out, something else will come along. If it does, it might be the beginning of something wonderful!

Submit that application and then forget it until you get the interview.

Find someone in this world who you can rest your head on. At the end of the day, a good partner is someone who supports you no matter what, even if you need to take a nap using them as your pillow for a bit.

A good friend will always have a place for you.

Many goats are so beloved by the communities they live in. For example, recently in the United States, the town of Fair Haven, Vermont, elected a goat named Lincoln to preside as mayor. The village of Cushendun in Northern Ireland had a similar beloved town goat; however, Johann, to my knowledge, never held elected office. He served the village of Cushendun as a volunteer greeter to visitors hoping to enjoy the Victorian architecture settled along the sea. Sadly, Johann served Cushendun until 2001, when he was the last animal to put to rest during the great Foot and Mouth Outbreak that brought the agriculture to a halt in the United Kingdom. Many people now visit Cushendun because it was the setting of an infamous scene from the popular television show Game of Thrones when sorceress Melisandre birthed a shadow. If you find yourself looking for the cave of the shadow baby, you can’t miss the statue built to celebrate the life of Johann the goat, welcoming you to the village.

The statue commemorating Johann the Goat was sculpted in 2002 by artist Deborah Brooks.

Wow, you know, I really think goats are actually quite over-rated! The six extra chromosomes they have over sheep are really no big deal. Sheep are great! They are unlikely to run away and provide lots of soft and snuggly wool to make sweaters, blankets and rugs. Who needs goats anyway?

It’s always best to play it safe and stay inside the fence! You never know what might be out there!

It is good sometimes to get off your routine. Routines are great and are well known to help with productivity and healthy habits, but every now and then some disruptions that challenge our boundaries are a welcome change.

Sometimes a disruption to the everyday is a wondrous thing.

Do you ever wonder about the places you might visit or live in? What adventures began or ended in those places, what agreements were made, what important things were decided, whether there were good times or bad times, or what other uses those spaces might have been? The world is an amazing place, and there might be amazing secrets hidden in the most normal places.

Maybe it’s a part of your story, maybe you are a part of its story.
