The thirteenth of January 2019

We are now nearly two weeks into 2019. Hopefully, at some point between the holiday festivities, embarking on resolutions and returning to work, you have carved out some much-needed time for rest. Although for many of us (myself included) it is hard not to fill every moment with seemingly important tasks, there are many benefits to devoting ourselves to relaxation. Rest can enhance creativity, productivity and focus. Setting aside time for regular rest can also reduce stress, inflammation and your risk of heart disease. Your sleep and immune system will get a boost from the reduction in sleep. So, never feel guilty for indulging in a lazy Sunday – it will make you a happier, healthier, more creative version of yourself!]

Perhaps consider that you already have everything you need to achieve your dreams, maintain or improve your health and wellbeing, and find true happiness.

There is something about the cold, damp days of January and February that always makes me want to hibernate. However, everyday the sun rises a smidgen earlier and sets a smidgen later. There is always something to look forward to, even if it’s an extra few moments of sunshine.

Get yourself up and out even if it’s cold!

New year, new you, find the way to happiness with this diet, this philosophy or a new regime! Alternatively, perhaps the way to actual happiness is to lower our expectations. That doesn’t mean succumbing to mediocrity or giving up on your hopes, dreams and goals. It just means redefining our expectations – pat yourself on the back for getting started, or accomplishing a part of your goal. Or, reflect on all of the good things in your life. Or take a moment to recognise what is going right – you wake up every morning, perhaps enjoy a tasty caffeinated beverage to a world where everyone is connected in some way or another. It’s a wonderful time to be alive!

Low expectations result in few disappointments: today, there is grass, it is green and delicious to someone.

Thinking about the year ahead? Many people find the new year is a great time to make resolutions pertaining to things they are going to do differently than the previous year. Oftentimes, these resolutions focus on self-improvement in one way or another. Goal setting is important and can be helpful, but perhaps consider making a resolution this year to accept and love yourself as is. Maybe you don’t really need that diet, plan or course, maybe you are great just the way you are.

Resolutions are fab, but so are you.

Tomorrow is Monday so let’s do this! There are only two weeks left in 2018 – did you accomplish everything you hoped, was it as magical as you dreamed? What are your aspirations, ambitions and expectations for 2019? Find a few moments in the hustle and bustle of the final holiday rush to take stock and plan ahead.

The future is bright, perhaps 2019 will be the best year yet?

The fourteenth of December 2018

Everyone has those days where it seems that nothing goes right. The post office is arbitrarily closed, you forget your keys or your bicycle lights, it’s cold, it rains unexpectedly, someone eats the last piece of cake, the list could go on and on. Perhaps the best way to deal with these type of days is to smile and laugh through it. It’s going to be ok. Perhaps even the person who passes you by with a grumpy attitude might be experiencing one of those days too! Practicing kindness towards ourselves on our upside-down days can help us in turn pass that kindness onto others who might need it.

Only a few more hours until the weekend begins. What adventures or relaxing activities await you after you leave your workplace, shut down your computer and enjoy a couple days of freedom? Will you reconnect with old friends, catch up on leisure reading, or embark on a longer fitness pursuit than the weekend usually allows? Whatever your plan – or lack of plan – is, I hope that it is wonderful.

Another weekend full of possibilities is upon us.

What may feel like a tiny gesture of kindness to you could transform the recipient’s day. Isn’t that amazing? In all of us, we have the power to spread joy and compassion, just by being kind. One of the reasons I think that I am so keen on goats is that smiles are contagious. I can’t help but smiling back when I see a goat, even if that goat is giving me a smidgen of side-eye. Even when you have a difficult day, flashing someone a smile or doing a small act of kindness can be a form of self care. It is especially important to remember to be kind during the holidays, you never know what the stranger on the bus or person you pass on the street has going on.

Smile at strangers and be kind to all.
