Sometimes, you just got to do your own thing, go your own way, and be your own best friend. It’s good to be part of a group or a community, but occasional solitude has its benefits as well. It can give you a chance to reboot, refocus, work out the kinks and solve problems, and even improve your relationships with others. Don’t worry that you are keeping yourself from those you care about, the better you take care of you the better you can be for those you care about.

Today is a very important day, because it is the Chinese Lunar New Year. Twenty percent of the world celebrates today as the beginning of the new year and the end of the coldest days! The day does not fall on the same date every year, but always occurs between January 21 and February 20. Generally, it is a day for prayers, fighting monsters, and lighting fireworks. Also, importantly, you should eat dumplings! Every year corresponds to a different animal, and this marks the year of the pig. The next time a year of the goat rolls around won’t be until 2027, but until then we can all enjoy some lovely photos of goats.

People born under the year of the pig are said to be considerate, responsible, independent and optimistic, but are also prone to laziness.

A new week is upon us – are you looking forward to anything (aside from and including spring)? Sundays are a great time to check in and make a plan for the upcoming week, you never know, something amazing might happen!

Whatever is on the horizon, I hope that it is wonderful.

A few years ago while surfing the web, I came across the most amazing thing: The Oxford Cambridge Goat Race. This event takes place yearly at Spitalfields City Farm in London, UK. I have been an avid follower of the race ever since. Infact, if it weren’t for the Oxford Cambridge Goat Race, you would not be reading and (hopefully) enjoying Goat of the Day, as the inspiration for this blog came from the race’s Facebook page that often posts a daily goat in the weeks leading up to the big event. This year, the race is set to take place on Sunday, April 7th. In addition to the goats, there are lots of fun activities at the farm, food, and a lovely mariachi band. I highly recommend it.

It’s ok to not feel like smiling some of the time, but when you do feel like smiling, make sure you share it with everyone you pass. You never know how you might unwittingly make someone’s day by sharing a kind smile.

An authentic smile can light up someone’s day.

When you find yourself wracked with worry, sometimes the best thing to do is ask yourself if the source of your worry is something you have control over. Did you do everything you could to prepare for it? Is the situation out of your hands? It is no use wasting your energy over issues that are out of your control; rather, direct your focus to things in your life that you do have control over. The polar vortex won’t last forever, and whatever worry vortex you have today will fade by tomorrow.

Sometimes it is better to save your energy than fight against things out of your control.

It is super cold in many parts of the world right now. I highly recommend investing in some outerwear to keep you feeling cosy and looking fabulous. Unfortunately, humans do not grow luxurious coats on their own, like some goats do.

Looking fab helps keep me cheery during the dreary winter months!

Benjamin Franklin certainly made a lot of inspirational quotes, I think he would have probably really enjoyed crafting some clever memes if he were alive today. He is credited with saying that “in this world nothing can be certain, except death and taxes;” however, he may have been paraphrasing Daniel Dafoe (relation to Willem Dafoe, unknown). Obviously, Franklin was speaking from a certain gendered, upper class, eighteenth-century cultural milieu. Perhaps this centuries old adage should be updated to include laundry. Nothing is certain in the world except for death, taxes and laundry.

Have you ever felt like a weirdo? As though you are a square peg trying to fit in a round hole? Perhaps, the qualities about you that may make you weird, peculiar, or different are actually the very things that make you awesome, and may even be your greatest strengths.

Celebrate you for you, because you’re awesome!

Say what you will about nurses, garbage collectors, or mechanics it’s obvious that were they to vanish in a puff of smoke, the results would be immediate and catastrophic. A world without teachers or dockworkers would soon be in trouble, and even one without science-fiction writers or ska musicians would clearly be a lesser place. – David Graeber
