The twenty third of January 2020

Have you noticed that you might be feeling a bit down this week? Well, don’t worry, that’s actually totally normal due to the lack of sunlight due to shorter days, longer nights and generally grey weather that blocks out the sun. Although “Blue Monday” was a clever marketing scheme, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a real condition that effects many people during this time of year. It’s ok to feel lethargic and irritable – your body just might be craving more serotonin that your brain isn’t producing as much due to the lack of sun. If you do feel down, and notice that you typically feel down this time of year, take comfort in the fact you are not alone. Mental health professionals can help you cope with the winter through light therapy, talk therapy and other treatments. I find it helps to stay productive and try to get some movement in everyday.

And so here are the last few hours of the 2010s. The decade for me certainly has had its ups and downs, and I am ready and excited to welcome whatever comes next. In celebration, I have compiled the ten most popular goats of the day from 2019 – which includes two sheep who were featured on April Fool’s Day. I hope wherever you are that you have a fantastic New Year’s Eve and that the new decade brings you peace and prosperity. Thank you for continuing to indulge my hobby of goat photography.

Although this is a festive time of year it is absolutely ok to not feel festive. Sometimes the holidays can dredge up all sorts of things. Make sure to take time for self care and to allow yourself to feel what you need to feel.

Take extra care of yourself as the holidays approach – this can be a joyous time of year but also a time of year that stirs up all sorts of things. Be patient, practice self care and don’t feel bad about eating an extra cookie or two.

Self care isn’t selfish during the holidays

Even as the days go short make sure to embrace the sunshine when you can – it can make your heart sing and vitamin D is good for your health.

Even if there is a chill in the air the sunshine will do you good.

The harder your work for something, the more you need rest. In our physical bodies, the time we spend resting after a difficult task allow our body to heal and our muscles to become stronger. So rest up – you’ll be stronger for the week ahead!

In order to be your best, strongest self, you have to take time to rest.

Never let your life be defined by numbers. You and your life are so much more than any arbitrary measurements we falsely subscribe to success.

You are more than just a number.

Last weekend’s harvest moon has really got me thinking about nourishment. As the seasons change, sometimes so do our priorities. The back to school vibe of September is a great time to check in and figure out what best fills you up – nutritionally, emotionally, even spiritually.

Be full of hope and gratitude this fall

One of the best parts about starting Goat of the Day is that my friends living in different parts of the world sometimes send me pictures of goats they encounter during their adventures. My friend Lena sent me a photograph of this goat in France on an island called Noirmoutier near a chévrerie where goat cheese is made. Although only bound to the pasture by a single rope, this goat was content where she was. Take a moment to find contentment exactly where you are – and remember a boundary is only as firm as you want it to be.

Sometimes you find yourself right where you want to be.
